December 08 My HomeSeptember 26 Installing Windows Vista Beta1 (from MSDN) - 101Alright, I just finished and installed windows vista beta1 (build 5112) after some initial issues..
Windows Vista looks great( I mean the one that comes as standard without Aero effects/High Video Memory card!)
It seems like there has been a lot of confusion about what to install and what goes with Windows Vista.
Here is my first hand informaiton on the installation experience that i would like to share..
My Windows Vista is a clean installation on the top of windows XP Sp2 machine. The installation actually creates a Windows.OLD folder for all the old files!
For more information about the installation, check out http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/forum-80.html
Note: I first tried installing the O/S from the virtual drive (using Deamon Tools) as i had an Vista ISO image downloaded from MSDN.But after installing the VISTA with core drivers the system restarts (and it looks for other drivers to install) and these time the virtual drive is gone!. I ended up having a blue screen to death.
So the only option i had is to burn a DVD and then re-install it again.
I DONT have the experience of virtual PC and that seems like an alternative approach!
MS Windows Vista Beta 1 comes with .NET framework version 2.0.50215, which is why you have no other option but to install VS 2005 Beta2 and WinFX beta 1 as all the applications share the same .NET framework version.
Here is the supporting articles that is worth to take a look..
If you are installing the CTP version of VS 2005 on Windows Vista PDC or Windows XP SP2 then
take a look at http://channel9.msdn.com/ctpmadness/
and the best information xml http://channel9.msdn.com/ctpmadness/BuildData.xml that tells you what goes with what!
Installing VS.NET 2005 Beta 2 on Vista is bit tricky. You have to first install the MSXML 6.0 Parser form the dvd manually and then install the VS.NET 2005 Beta 2.
As of now, there are only few good resources that explains you to install Vista and if you want be an early starter you may want to consider all the above.
The .NET version that is supported by Vista Beta 1 or PDC is not supported by other applications that were released during the same period of time.
But it is all worth to go through this hastle to finally see the Vista up and running.
PS: All the work needs to be redone once the vista beta 2 comes again. That is what sucks!
